  • Abstract
Establishing a possible link between magnetic hardening in Sm(Co,Cu)5 magnets and in the commercial "2:17" magnets was attempted. A series of ternary Sm-Co-Cu alloys with composition between Sm(Co,Cu)5 and Sm2Co17 which contain different ratios of 1:5 and 2:17 phases were investigated and their magnetic properties and microstructure were studied. Single phase ternary [Sm(Co0.6Cu0.4)5]1-x(Sm2Co17)x alloys were successfully homogenized at temperatures varying from 1050°C to 1240°C. The saturation magnetization and Curie temperature of the resulting disordered hexagonal structure increases while the coercivity decreases from 6.8 kOe to 0.7 kOe, with increasing x.
