Abstract
Summary form only given. We investigate the possibility of extending the limits of confocal imaging using coherent heterodyne detection with narrow bandwidth light. This technique has the advantage of simplicity in terms of equipment and handling and permits detection up to the shot-noise limit. Moreover, it can easily be implemented in most standard confocal microscopes.
