Abstract :
Summary form only given. We present new results on the photosensitivity response of optical fibers and slab waveguides driven by 157-nm radiation. Index changes were measured by using a Michelson fiber interferometer or by interrogating Bragg gratings (at 1.55 /spl mu/m) formed with a phase mask. For fibers, rapid-index changes were noted for standard telecommunication fiber (Corning SMF-28) in comparison with longer wavelength sources. The accumulated index change is shown as a function of the number of laser pulses. Rates of index change were linear with fluence.
