Abstract
Summary form only given. We describe a technique for data detection in a page-access optical memory extending the well-known method of sequence detection from digital communications to two dimensions. This technique, which we call Decision Feedback Viterbi Algorithm (DF-VA) Detection, improves the bit-error-rate (BER) performance. Simulation results of the detection process for typical examples of ISI-corrupted page-access memories are presented. For each case, DF-VA detection is compared to bit-by-bit threshold detection and various other detection schemes from digital communications. Experimental results investigating the performance of the proposed Viterbi detectors are presented. Finally, feasibility issues pertaining to the practical implementation of these detectors in are discussed.
