Abstract
Summary form only given. We report a new, much more compact, efficient, reliable and very flexible pulse source based on the use of a single mode (SM) laser diode as a master oscillator for pulse train generation in combination with a high gain, ultra high saturation power, directly diode-pumped Er-doped fiber amplifier. This master oscillator-power fiber amplifier (MOPFA) approach gives a number of advantages in comparison with the earlier techniques because it produces tunable duration, short pulses with appropriate pulse shape, well determined repetition rate, and the opportunity of precise external triggering.
