Summary form only given. Over the last fifteen years, the number of laser printers has exploded into the millions. Demand has been spurred by increased performance and near-typeset print quality at ever decreasing cost. The heart of a laser printer is the polygonal laser scanner that exposes the image to be printed on a photoconductor. Other exposure devices, such as LED light bars, electroluminescent emitters, or moving micromirror arrays, may also be used. The resolution of the exposure devices used in desktop laser printers has evolved from 300 DPI (dots per inch) to 600 DPI and 1200 DPI.
