Abstract
Summary form only given. We have produced a fully coaxial fiber phase-modulator free from fragility problems previously encountered with ZnO-on-fiber devices by using fiber coated with a thick (25 /spl mu/m) layer of gold, this device has a top electrode of 0.8-mm length, operated at a frequency of 320 MHz and achieved a record phase modulation. Finally, a simple and accurate theoretical model has been developed in which the effects of electrode loadings, diffractive and material acoustic losses are taken into account.
