Abstract
Reports on an experiment in which a modelocked titanium sapphire laser was used to excite a number of two-photon transitions in a sample of laser-cooled Rb atoms within a magnetooptical trap (MOT). Although the laser has a total bandwidth of /spl sim/300 GHz, corresponding to its /spl sim/1 ps pulse duration, we have been able to observe linewidths approaching the natural linewidth. This is due to the fact that the observed signal is the coherent sum of the interactions of a large number of individual pulses.
