Abstract
Summary form only given. We present autocorrelation and pulse intensity data and calculations for off-resonant excitation. We observe significant pulse breakup for detunings as large as 8 nm on either side of the Cs resonance. Interestingly, the oscillation period of the broken up pulse is independent of the detuning. This is because the extremely wide laser bandwidth leaves the spectral intensity of the laser at line center nearly constant even at 8 nm detuning.
