Abstract
A simple model is developed to describe the mechanisms which govern the transfer efficiency and operating speed of the tetrode bucket-brigade device (BBD). It is shown that the high-frequency operation is limited by the intrinsic transfer rate of the tetrode gate, while the transfer inefficiency at low frequencies is mainly determined by the barrier-height modulation of the transfer gate. Experimental results for an original and for two improved tetrode BBD´s are presented and discussed.
