Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to provide a discussion of Very High Speed Integrated Circuit (VHSIC) technology. Because the technology is in the early stages of development, the discussion focuses on the technological challenges to be met rather than the accomplishments. The discussion includes the following topics" integrated circuit progress, Defense needs for VHSIC technology, a description of the VHSIC Program, the benefits of scaling to smaller dimensions and finally, barriers which must be overcome to achieve VHSIC goals.
