Abstract
Summary form only given. We studied experimentally the dependence of the SBS gain factor and phase conjugate (PC) fidelity on the mode composition of pump radiation and Stokes signal with the experimental setup shown. A Rb laser (single-mode, one-frequency, pulsed) and a quartz step-index. The fiber of 50 /spl mu/m core diameter, NA 0.25, SBS amplifier length of 2.2 m, SBS generator length of 12 m was used. Radiation from Rb laser was launched into the fiber at an angle in such a way that only a small part of the fiber aperture was filled.
