Abstract
The fabrication and characterization of a new type of phase-locked laser array which displays narrow, single lobe far-field patterns is reported. The new array achieves phase-locking through coupling by diffraction in a central section where the propagating eigen-modes are unguided. The light is guided in parallel-element waveguides on either side of the central mode-mixing region.
