Abstract :
The toroidal cage coil is a simply constructed robust component suitable for high-current power-electronics applications. The construction of the coil is described. Formulas are derived and tested for the inductance and effective a.c. resistance. A general theory is given for a.c. losses with nonsinusoidal waveforms, and this is applied to give optimal design criteria for the cage coil.
