Abstract :
Future cellular networks will witness a full-scale introduction of small sized cells and wide implementation of smart antenna systems. In such systems, the combination of high traffic density and mobility effects on system performance are quite significant. In this paper we present a study of the performance of a CDMA cellular system using smart antennas, where mobility of users inside the cell and between cells is considered. A considerable number of calls are dropped due to the movement of mobiles in different regions of a cell; therefore the capacity is significantly reduced. The beamwidth and cell size also affect the performance and considerably influence the impact of mobility on the capacity of the system. We show how decreasing the beamwidth increases the capacity but at the same time worsens the effects of mobility on the performance
