Abstract
DOD issued DOD Directive 8100.2 to set standards for US Military uses of commercial wireless LAN´s for Sensitive but UNCLAS (SBU) applications in the DOD global information grid (GIG). A vendor neutral review of commercial wireless LAN hardware and software that is being used with military encryption products to provide wireless LAN radios to the US Military for high speed mobile communications shows that the most common solutions are IP-sec VPN tunneling (layer 3), or layer 2 encryption solutions which meet FIPS 140-2 information assurance requirements. An overview of two leading edge hardware and software solutions is provided to show conclusively that a layer 2 solution is far superior to IPSec in a wireless deployment.
