Abstract
Using various PMD statistics, and including higher-order terms, the performance of a PMD compensator with a fixed differential group delay (DGD) is evaluated. It is shown that the so-called Maxwellian case is the worst case both without and with compensation. Therefore, the optimization of a PMD compensator can be carried out with the Maxwellian case only.
