Abstract
Novel service layer (IP/MPLS) and transport layer (SONET/SDH, WDM) network architectures are analyzed and compared for IP backbones, considering multiple parameters: network capacity, cost, restoration strategy, reconfigurability and accommodation of preemptable traffic. The results show the value of networking in multi-terabit IP backbones.
