  • Abstract
Summary form only given. The promise of multi-terabit Internet protocol (IP) routers with high-speed interfaces matching per-wavelength line rate in a DWDM system raises the specter of direct IP over DWM network architecture which usurps traditional transport layer functions. In this paper we will examine economic as well as operation aspects of this architecture against the architecture in which an active optical layer provides wavelength level switching and management functions.
