Abstract
Development work on high-temperature batteries for electric utility energy storage has been underway for more than 25 years. It is only within the last few years, however, that the technology for one of these high-temperature systems, the sodium/sulfur (Na-S) battery, has reached a stage of sophistication in which it has been possible to demonstrate the capabilities for utility energy storage in a full-scale plant. In this paper, the state of the art of high-temperature batteries for utility energy storage is briefly reviewed
