  • Abstract
The author draws attention to the problems of existing diagnostics practice, as it affects some heavy vehicle operators and subsequently refers to the MOT issue. The author aims to show that the three topics in the title are related and that the problem described is heavily conditioned by the proliferation of approaches to diagnostics. The author also proposes that a more rational approach to diagnostics, requiring fewer sets of ´dedicated; test equipment or, better still, a ´universal´ diagnostics tester, would ease the mechanics´ skill problem and thus improve reliability and maintainability of vehicles
