  • Abstract
Discusses microstrip patch antennas and their bandwidth. Ways to increase the bandwidth are discussed. In this work a new approach is proposed to modify the substrate in order to disturb the formation of surface-wave modes and as a result increase the impedance bandwidth of the antenna. A rectangular trench is routed around the periphery of the patch to present a large enough discontinuity as to make the surface-wave modes evanescent.
