Abstract
Cascading failures in power systems are very rare processes but often with very severe consequences. There are various tools for mitigation of dangerous network conditions that could lead to cascading; most of them based on the protection relays. We suggest that wide area monitoring and control is a very suitable concept and a viable alternative for this purpose.
