Abstract
A class of switching systems that is formed by an automaton and a finite number of discrete-time systems is studied. The goal is to choose the continuous inputs as well as to control the switchings within the automaton in an optimal sense. As a case study, the design of handoff algorithms for cellular communication systems based on signal-strength measurements is explored
