Abstract :
This paper presents a current control strategy for multilevel power converters. The principle of output deadbeat control is extended to the control of multilevel power converters in general. The proposed control scheme is shown to be a special case of the pole placement technique. The application of the proposed control is illustrated with a hybrid multilevel switching power converter (HMSC) to track a given reference current waveform. The commonly encountered problem of voltage balancing, among the input capacitors, in multilevel power converters is addressed and the effectiveness of the HMSC in minimizing this problem is illustrated. Computer simulations using SABER are presented. Experimental results to substantiate the reference tracking capability of the proposed control scheme are also included
