  • Abstract
British Satellite Broadcasting´s Movie channel is of particular interest in the development of higher definition television, in that this channel takes advantage of the wide aspect ratio (16:9) capabilities of the MAC system, as built into all receivers. From the start of service, the films offered on this channel can be view on conventional 4:3 aspect ratio DBS receivers without the need for such techniques as `letter-boxing´, while at the same time being capable of being displayed on a new generation of wide-screen (16:9) television sets. This represents the first step along the `evolutionary´ road to high definition television
