Abstract
In the following a procedure describing the technique of spread spectrum modulation for transmitting up to 20 kilobit/s of binary data over 230 V power lines is explained. In the first phase of the development frequency and voltage limits, which were specified by the Deutsche Bundespost and CENELEC until 1990, had to be met. The signals transmitted are selected in such a way, that they produce a Barker-similar correlation function, not restricted to the length of 13, in the receiving unit. The special one- or multichannel modulation results in a spectral adaptation of the transmitted signal in correspondence to the transmission-channel, which has a strong dispersive and time-variant characteristic
