Abstract
In many instances refurbishment plans require the implementation of more advanced control techniques in order to realise to the full the potential advantages. This applies where the use of turbine following boiler modes lead to a more economic use of fuel or where improved steam admission procedures for the turbine can reduce the overall start-up time. Such improvements almost invariably require the implementation of overall plant control concepts which can only be effected by the adoption of hierarchical, distributed digital control systems. The author discusses the developments and design of electrohydraulic governing systems for turbines including the functions available, operator interfaces, and installations in the UK, Australia, and Canada
