Abstract
We present a physical layer architecture for providing high speed downlink packet data services using multiple transmit and multiple receive antennas. This technique achieves high spectral efficiency by using a single spreading code to modulate distinct data streams transmitted from multiple antennas. The receiver uses multiple antennas and interference cancellation to demodulate the data streams. Preliminary link level results for flat Rayleigh fading channels indicate significant performance advantages over conventional single antenna techniques. We conclude by discussing practical considerations at the base station and terminal for the proposed architecture
