Abstract :
This paper describes the design of a high-efficiency single-phase inverter. The techniques employed in the design include a combination of hybrid pulse width modulation (HPWM), and zero voltage switching (ZVS), to improve the efficiency of the inverter for high switching frequency applications. The HPWM control scheme provides simple control logic implementation using either an analog circuit or a digital controller. In the ZVS-HPWM inverter proposed in this paper, voltage stresses on all switches are limited to the input voltage. A design guideline for selecting the resonant tank elements and the minimum off time of the clamp switch is provided. A prototype was built to verify the design and to compare zero-voltage switching and hard switching using MOSFETs and IGBTs. It is shown that the best efficiency is obtained using MOSFET switches in the proposed ZVS-HPWM inverter.
