Abstract :
An expert system for forecasting model selection, written in Turbo-Prolog and implemented on a PC 386, allows a nonexpert in the forecasting field to utilize the relevant knowledge and use it to choose appropriate forecasting techniques. Detailed discussion of three components of this system-the knowledge base, the inference mechanism, and the user interface (explanation facility)-is included. An inference algorithm is proposed, which is capable not only of dealing with uncertainty of information, but also of searching paths in parallel and giving all solutions at once.
