Abstract :
Cyclic Redundancy Checks (CRCs) are extensively used for effective error detection in communication systems. Previous studies evaluate the performance of CRC generator polynomials solely based on their Undetectable Error (UE) criterion without taking retransmission and overhead dynamics into account. In this paper, we study CRC coding performance by introducing a cross layer goodput performance criterion which takes CRC generator polynomial, message length, application UE tolerance, and Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) parameters into account. Goodput of a communication link is analyzed under varying network conditions to demonstrate that our proposed framework can be effectively used to select the best performing CRC generator polynomial along with the optimum message length.
