Abstract
The paper presents a novel algorithm to enhance the operational planning flexibility of protective measures of electromagnetic transients in smart power systems. The algorithm considers a risk constrained approach to place surge arresters and to enhance the power supply security. It facilitates a reduction in the number of surge arresters required for electromagnetic transient protection without taking a risk of damage to important equipment. For validation purposes, the algorithm has been implemented on a software environment with the IEEE 14 bus test system. Studies suggest that the algorithm reduces the hidden risks of electromagnetic transient events in smart power systems and enhance the equipment availability.
