Abstract
Classical pole-placement and compensator design methods for the tuning of power system stabilizers (PSS) have proved requirement of further improvement to ensure stability in large complex power grids. Newer data-mining strategies also run into convergence problems due to the computational burden of handling large dimensional systems. In this paper, a fast PSS tuning technique is proposed, whereby the entire power system except the machine on which the PSS is located, is balanced and reduced. In addition to the benefits of fast convergence, the reduced order system is able to replicate the stability behavior of the original system to a large extent. The performance of the proposed approach is verified through a representative practical power network.
