Abstract :
The integration level of renewable energy resources has been continuously increasing in recent years introducing several technical challenges for utility and Independent System Operator (ISO) protection and planning engineers. One major challenge is related to the development of reliable models for system protection studies and accurate evaluation of their short circuit contributions. Converter interfaced wind turbines produce significantly different current waveform signatures compared to the traditional synchronous or asynchronous generators. This paper proposes a new phasor domain modeling approach for Type III wind turbines (WTs) with doubly-fed induction generators (DFIGs), that considers the impact of DFIG control.
