  • Abstract
Pulse power systems have been stimulated intense interest towards high power, compact structure and high reliability. In this paper, a compact megavolt pulse autotransformer with inner cylindrical magnetic core and conical secondary windings is presented. First, the operation principal and the geometrical structure are described. At the same time, the electric circuit is analyzed and the parametric relation between the auto-transformer and the traditional transformer is derived. And the auto-transformer can raise voltage ratio with 5%. Second, the compact pulse transformer is experimentally investigated from low voltage to high voltage. And then the lifetime of the pulse transformer is experimentally studied and statistically estimated. Moreover, the reliability is statistically analyzed. Furthermore, the reliability growth experiment is carried out through improving inner magnetic core and conical secondary windings´ insulting strength. Nowadays, the insulating failure of the pulse transformer focus on the high voltage output terminal. Finally, the compact megavolt pulse transformer is development. It can operate at 1 MV secondary voltage with 6 μs secondary charging time. And the reliability is above 0.9 and the lifetime is 10 pulses. These efforts set a good foundation of a compact megavolt pulse transformer and show a promising application for the further.
