Abstract
The parameters for fast charged (tens of ns) Self Break Oil Switches (breakdown voltage, temporal variation (jitter) and effective dielectric strength) are not plentiful in the literature. This paper presents the breakdown and jitter parameters for standard transformer oil up to voltages of 700 kV. In addition, the design and operation of a simple experiment to measure the switching parameters as well as diagnostic design, calibration, and modeling of the experiment are discussed. Several electrode materials were investigated with both polarities for point plane geometries.
