Abstract :
A compact Rectangular Dielectric Resonator Antenna is designed using perforations (symmetrical array of square slots) and edge grounding. The perforations improve impedance bandwidth by lowering down the quality factor. The perforations are selected in such a manner that fundamental TE111 mode is preserved in the modified perforated structure. The symmetrical electric field distribution of fundamental TE111 mode helps in reducing the antenna volume by one fourth when edge grounding is incorporated. The edge grounding involves removal of dielectric at a distance of quarter wavelength and placement of metal plate along the chopped off edges. This results in a wideband, light weight and extremely compact design suitable for frequency range from 3.6 to 5.4 GHz.
