Abstract :
This work presents a traffic information based adaptive physical route selection support system. The main aim here is to ensure quicker travel time by selecting one of the possible routes between a pair of source and destination. The proposed system intakes traffic information, such as volume to capacity ratio, traffic flow, vehicle queue length and green cycle length etc by the use wireless sensor nodes and CCTVs located at different cross sections. The road information between source and destination pair are collected from a cloud based map application, such as Google Map. Such a map may suggest the shortest distance path that exists between source and destination as static information but this may not be traveled in the shortest time if varying traffic flow exists. Our proposed model can take such dynamic information and can deliver twofold outcome - adjust the green cycle length of each lane based on the volume to capacity ratio, traffic flow and vehicle queue length of all the lanes, and assist a driver to select shortest time path. We also show that the proposed adaptive approach can deliver superior results based on dynamic information to static information based route selection.
