Abstract :
In this paper an ac-dc power factor correction topology is proposed for battery charging applications. A passive snubber is proposed with less number of components like two inductors, a capacitor and a diode to achieve soft switching features for the boost converter switch. The PFC converter achieves near unity power factor, perfect sinusoidal input ac main current, reduced switching losses of the boost diode and the switch and a regulated dc output. Detailed modes of operation of the proposed converter is developed with theoretical analysis along with simulation results at an output power of 3.2 kW load. The converter reaches near unity power factor greater than 0.98. The efficiency of the proposed circuit is evaluated as 95% over wide operating ranges.
