Abstract
This paper presents the holistic approach for design optimization of induction motors with the objective to have overall better and environment friendly performance, going beyond mere better efficiency. Generally while motor design optimization the improvements are done in one´s own domain in isolation. However to improve the overall performance of machines, all the inter related design aspects i.e. desired torque speed characteristics, electromagnetic field distribution, I2R loss distribution, efficiency, thermal behavior, aerodynamic and electromagnetic noise and vibration etc. needs to be attended, through collaborative engineering. In the present work a 15 kW, 4 Pole Induction Motor has been considered as a sample case for design optimization using Finite Element Analysis tool for electromagnetic field analysis. Cooling Circuit is optimized by carrying out numerical simulation of different fan geometries using Computational Fluid Dynamics tool, with the objective to increase cooling efficiency and reduce aerodynamic noise.
