Abstract :
This paper presents a method of improving power conversion efficiency of a boost LED driver circuit for edge-lit LED Backlight Units. The proposed circuit consists of a conventional boost converter and a new passive snubber circuit which consists of an inductor, two capacitors, and two diodes; it improves the problems relating to a high voltage gain and hard switching of the boost LED driver. The proposed boost LED driver was built and tested on the 42 inch edge-lit LED backlight. The power conversion efficiency of the proposed circuit with an input voltage of 24V, an output voltage of 114V, and an operating frequency of 280kHz was measured as 94%; this value was 13.4% higher than that of the conventional boost LED driver circuit.
