Abstract :
Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) is critically dependent on its power converter, typically implemented as a two-stage AC-DC-AC converter. Matrix converters, which feature as bi-directional conversion between input AC power and desired AC or DC power output, may be considered as the ideal converter topology for WPT, however, are constrained by their complexity and cost. In this paper, a low cost microcontroller based matrix converter WPT system design is proposed and examined. Finally, a prototype WPT system is built successfully demonstrating that the design provides a cost efficient approach to exploit the advantages that matrix converters can provide.
