Abstract
Venipuncture as a mode of gaining intravenous access is a crucial practice in pre-surgical and conventional drug administering procedures. Biomedical engineering has focused on the automation and aid in these processes to promote and encourage non-invasive catheterization of patients. Indeed, medical personnel are highly challenged by the various patient´s skin tones and topologies. This paper proposes an in depth analysis of illuminant configuration to provide enhanced visual aids to medical personnel while performing vein catheterisation. The proposed study introduces an optimised illuminant selection to ensure an enhanced vein visualisation independent of patient skin tones. The further selection of combined LED configuration in terms of wavelength and power will improve the contrast of vessels, leading to automated and optimised illumination for all patients and better image quality.
