Abstract
Summary form only given. The emergence of biotechnology as a major component of the global economy poses profound questions for those in business who plan corporate strategy and those in government who formulate regulatory policy. The authors review some of the major trends, concentrating upon the industrial transformation from chemicals to pharmaceuticals to biotechnology. This paper is based on a project conducted in a graduate course in the Engineering and Technology Management department at Portland State University, USA
