Abstract
In the new millennium, enterprises that will be successful are those that can compete on the basis of creating value for the customer. The core value determinants (CVDs) of customer value include quality, speed, flexibility, cost and convenience for the customer. The implementation of a CVD-driven competitive strategy requires a firm to deploy its core technological capabilities in a manner that they create value for the customer and cannot be easily imitated. Many approaches have been used to assess and study the development of technological capabilities. Yet, the influence of information technology on the development of technological capability does not seem to have been examined in an integrated manner. There is a tendency to treat information technology as a support service and not as a strategic asset. This paper attempts to show, based on a survey of recent literature, how firms can deploy information technology to upgrade their technological capability and create a competitive CVD profile
