Abstract :
This paper proposes a cloud-connected code executable architecture and its on-chip virtual instruction memory controller for the Internet of things (IoT). A remotely installed sensor system such as an environmental activity monitor commonly has an embedded processor including statically compiled embedded software in on-chip flash memory, only providing fixed services. For flexible code updates and on-the-fly code access to the remote cloud, the proposed on-cloud virtual memory controller enables to connect instruction execution space of the processor to the cloud by modifying conventional on-chip bus architecture. The proposed cloud-connected architecture fetches the instructions from the cloud-side remote storage area in the runtime, instead of using a directly connected on-chip instruction bus. The experimental results show that the proposed technique realizes storage-less sensor architecture.
