  • Abstract
The ever rising demand of electrical energy consumption has led to increased use of distributed generation (DG) sources. Nowadays integration of distributed generation units in electrical distribution networks is an important aspect. This paper proposes a new approach for optimally determining the size and location of DG in coordination with location and tap setting of voltage regulator (VR). A multi-objective optimization problem aims at voltage profile improvement, minimization of power loss, voltage stability enhancement and minimum number of tap operations of voltage regulator. An efficient and novel particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is developed to solve this optimization problem which uses ranked initial particle population instead of randomly generated one. The objective function is evaluated using Jacobian based power flow method. Results obtained on a standard 33 bus Radial Distribution System (RDS) demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.
