Abstract
This paper discusses the problems in highly regulated (i.e. highly documented) industries, and the way of resolving them by introducing electronic document management systems (EDMS). Some key problems of the manual paper handling are pointed out, together with some trends and statistics regarding information processing. Basic issues of electronic document management systems are described, as well as the underlying architecture of the software system. Through the organizational information flow concept and various aspects of the implementation, towards knowledge management as the ultimate goal, this paper concludes with a summary of the benefits of such systems.
