Abstract
This paper presents a new method for calculating the voltage profile along a given transmission line during a system transient. This may be used for detecting harmful levels of voltage signals that appear along the length of a long transmission line during transients caused by switching events or faults. It may also be useful in obtaining screen shots of waveforms to be used in animation of traveling wave transients. The voltage profile is recovered by developing a time-series model for the voltages at intermediate points along the length of the line. The proposed method is novel in the sense that once the time-series model is developed, the technique does not require any further simulations for the calculation of the voltages at intermediate points. A transient simulator such as the Electromagnetic Transients Program is utilized to obtain the necessary historical information of the voltages at terminal ends and at the intermediate points to be used in developing the time-series model. This paper presents several examples where voltage profiles are obtained during different types of transient events
